Marty Walters, bartender and founder of RealStraw LLC.

A short history of drink straws.

Thousands of years ago, people started using wheat and rye stems to sip their favorite beverages. About a hundred and forty years ago, paper straws were invented. After that, plastic straws took over. Then a sea turtle got hurt. Time to get rid of plastic straws. Let's get back to nature with all-natural RealStraw drink straws and stir sticks.
I was just swimming along and then...BOOM! OW!

RealStraw beginnings

Article in Buffalo Rising about my RealStraw journey. Here's how RealStraw grabbed me. Here's a Spectrum Video News Story from 2019. Here's a Spectrum Video News story from 2020.
WHO AM I TO SELL YOU COCKTAIL STRAWS? Hello, and thanks for stopping by! As a bartender for forty years, I've served over a million happy guests. I started RealStraw in 2019 to deliver a premium, high quality, organically grown, sustainable cocktail straw solution. 2021's crop is the best yet. My straws cost a little more than other grain stem cocktail straws because they are hand made and grown in the USA. RealStraws feature a low carbon manufacturing process. Driving my 1952 Ford 8N tractor, I harvest RealStraw, pulling a 1940's era McCormick Deering reaper/ binder (below) that gently bundles the organically grown, special hybrid rye. After field drying, I hand select and hand cut each straw, which is why I only offer small batches: One man, only two hands. After cutting, I triple wash the straws in filtered water, and then oven-dry them. Grown in the USA, hand made by me personally. If you truly appreciate craftsmanship in your craft cocktail or small-batch spirit, I trust you will enjoy your limited-edition RealStraw. Your drink deserves a RealStraw. Sincere thanks for your purchase. Cheers! Marty
My 1952 Ford 8N tractor pulls my 1940's era McCormick Deering reaper binder. The greatest generation designed equipment that still runs eighty years later. GOD BLESS FARMERS! Every single one I met on this journey was incredibly hard working and helpful.
